First Impression Of The Ailunce HD2 DMR Handheld Radio.
The HD1 is a good radio, and Retevis improved on an already successful design, notably adding a USB-C port and Bluetooth. In this video I show you the radio compared to the previous model, along with a bit of DMR channel programming.

I am going to build this antenna, so simple and cheap. Good idea.
Lead free, good for the nature but very very bad for techs. The trick with rosin will work but the melting temperature is so much to high, especialy with smd components.
Lead-free is crap, period. Lead comes from the ground, it's mined. It's not like we're creating new lead...

I have noticed some reports of spurious emissions. Do you have some further insides on that?
I've seen videos, but I don't overly care...
@@RadioPrepper :( , thanks for the quick reply 73
Adding to this, my daily driver is a Yaesu. Keep in mind that in a prepping context the issue isn't as important as in daily recreational use. I always prefer better filtered radios, but it is not always a deal breaker if the signal isn't as clean as it should be.
Thanks from 🇹🇷

Bravo. Did your friend wind the cable through the ferrite core in the same direction or 5he opposite direction as your construction? Does the direction of winding make a difference?
Hi, no difference. I don't remember what he did, it was a while ago..
Is the front end any good on this or does it get bombarded by interference frequently?
It seems fine, but I am in a fairly RF quiet location..
Excellent, thank you
At this point I have 7 different hand helds, but you almost convince me I need one more✋73's🎙KD9OAM🎧
There have been Bluetooth equipped radios for years my AnyTone 878 and my Icom ic52 both have Bluetooth that’s nothing new!
Thanks, none of mines ever were..
I have both. for me, hd2 has much better reception, can "work" with the screen in the sun, the center dial works a little bit better (yet slow response), the c usb for charging is good, the antenna seems to me with better swr, bluetooth is nice to have, extra upper button is an improvement, gps is slow locking the sattelites and when using gps with aprs would like to have the channel transmiting location even when not selected (blue background) en the screen... what else?? well thats for now
The screen is slightly bigger it would be interesting what firmware will bring later in future
The radio doesn't pass the regulations regarding spurious emissions. It's just another expensive Baofeng.
The HD1 however is part 90.
I've seen several videos, the features appear to be plentiful, but several reports claim spurious emissions. Thanks for sharing.
Spurious emissions are a serious concern for any responsible operator.
Serious question why should Preppers care if it passes spurious emission test? Besides the argument it’s illegal ?
Good question. Depends how bad those emissions are for me. Out of bands use for me is ill advised. No need to draw attention or create problems to other services. Otherwise, harmonic limit numbers are a legal construct, but there for a reason, so IMHO it's good to avoid worst-case scenarios.
As to legality, ultimately it's the user's responsibility to determine that, as amateur radio operators supposedly aren't just appliance operators.
for the bluetooth mic to trigger vox it would have to keep the bluetooth audio channel open which would kill both devices batteries. you would need a bluetooth push to talk button which are available fairly inexpensively. the earpiece that it came with probably has a ptt on it.
read the manual - yes the earpiece has a PTT on the side
Great video sir, thanks!
F4iss merci❤❤
@RadioPrepper Will these devices be rendered useless if not stored in a faraday bag or faraday cage during an EMP (Electro-Magnetic Pulse) or CME (Coronal Mass Ejection)? I want to get a group of my family and friends along with myself to purchase some sort of mesh device for emergency comms in the near future if affordable. I also want to make sure that someone in their 70s is is not very tech savvy can use if phones and other mainstream communication means go down.
They will be protected in a Faraday cage, but don't forget to also include a phone or tablet for interface.
due to repetative strain injury i am learning with a paddle.

Thank you for the video! I have built this project but with the only difference being I used a 100w resistor. As far as the "rf probe" function goes, I am getting a reading with a multimeter set to DC but it seems to be about 27% off (to high) with the calculation you hold up on the paper. Am I missing something?
Revision, I now see it depends on the frequency. I was using two vhf radios in my prior tests that I mentioned and now I tried UHF and its 800% higher. I'm thinking HF should be pretty close but I will try that another time. Thanks again for the project!
It's probably a wound resistor, which makes a coil in AC. You must use a carbon resistor, or other, but not wound..
@@RadioPrepper It looks exactly like yours just 100w instead of 250w but I did get them cheap on the internet.
Weird, I only used mine on HF though, so who knows...
Could you stack speaker voice coils to get the antanner the right length?
Might be worth a try, but finding the right value might be hard without regular taps to measure..
Isn't that why there are specific WARC Bands where no contesting is allowed ? 5, 10, 18, and 24 MHz are deemed no contesting ! 🤔.....? Just Say'n !
Sure, but not everyone has the radio or/and antenna for them.
@@RadioPrepper Not to be argumentative, but ....where there's a Will, there's a way ! I think if these folks really wanted to operate, they would find a way ! There are just too many affordable alternatives, to keep you off the air, these days ! Perhaps what's lacking is a little ingenuity ? And too, these may be Hams that haven't bothered to learn Morse Code ? Which serves well, when looking for a place to operate ! But so many offer excuses why they can't learn the Morse Code ! But I think they are cheating themselves, and missing out on great fun ! But that is just my opinion, and I don't want to stray too far from the topic ! Just offering a great escape, for those that feel trapped and helpless by Contesters !
@sleeve8651 sure, there are ways, but I shouldn't have to go out of my way to accommodate people who have no respect for others and take it all.
@@RadioPrepper Not to drag this on, but not knowing how long you've been licensed, ( Guessing you are a licensed Amateur ?), but Amateur Radio has undergone several changes thru the years ! Some through attrition, some thru advancements in technology ! Not to preach to the choir ! But the latter has likely been most influential, just by the nature of the beast ! Pushing the Radio Amateur out of their role of providing Emergency communications ! In many cases, by individuals that were in charge of Cities Emergency centers, that lacked understanding of the value of the Amateur Radio Service ! Where they chose in many cases, to throw money at it, and bought expensive, many times, " Motorola " radios, and then passed them out like candy, to untrained personnel ! And with the push from Radio manufacturers, to try and help themselves stay alive, to them lower the requirements for becoming a licensed operator ! So what we see today, is simply where Amateur Radio has morphed, into a completely different Animal ! Going from a , " Service ", to now what most think of as a, " Hobby " ! It is what it is ! The Genie's out of the bottle, and it's not going back in ! My advice, if I may, would be instead of sitting on the sidelines, would be to become involved ! Perhaps push yourself into learning new things ! Enjoy the Freedom to communicate, while we still have the ability ! In closing, as the old adage states, " If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem " ! 🤔.....? Just Say'n !

I think the Germans left lots of lead, At least twice. good video.
Great video, he speaks the truth. Really well done and excellent advice to anyone learning CW!
So where is the antenna?
Took a long time to ship, mod in 1 hour, works great! Gene
He gives off such strong narcissist vibes. wouldn't want to have to deal with this dude irl...
I've been called a few things, but that's a first. What could I have possibly said that might make you think that?
You do know that a HALF WAVE end fed antenna is only a half wave on one frequency, right?
Of course!
Use the AMS if only for covienence of not messing about with filament.
I wouldnt use these for prepping. I bet even with GPS off there is a backdoor way of turning it on letting some scrotes find you, your stuff and family.
There is an option to add your amateur radio callsign. Is that what disables encryption? It seems like in the USA you are better off not using the callsign which isn’t required on 915Mhz even if you have one.
Yes, nobody should use their callsign on 915, the same way you would not use your HAM callsign on CB.
@@RadioPrepper thank you Gil!
You mentioned having something like 9 or 10 meshtastic devices. Do you have 1:1 ratio pairing to a single phone/tablet per meshtastic node or do you have multiple coexisting on the same phone?
1to1 to a single phone.
@@RadioPrepper I’m following. Each meshtastic device can only be paired with one phone/tablet/computer. I’m not clear on the opposite. Can you have multiple meshtastic devices paired to a single phone/tablet/computer? Thanks for your educating video and taking the time to answer questions.
Good session, regards from meshtastic user in The Netherlands!!
A little strange video... 🤔
Good info Gil, thank you
How much more distance is it possible to achieve switching from Long Range fast/fast to Very Long Range/Slow? I live in a crowded city so looking for ways to achieve better distance even if it's way slower.
Not sure but the problem is that everyone is on LongFast but for a private channel, you could try slower, but not the minimum, which doesn't really work.
Thanks Gil for the great information on meshtastic device for communication when everything else is down ..... nice to setup a network of them =) de Pat N5VMO
Never mind
How much $
How many turns for 30 - 10 meters for FT114 31?
No idea...
@@RadioPrepper thanks
